Why Am I Gaining Weight When I'm Doing Everything Right? The Hidden Role of Inflammation

By Dee Davidson, FDN-P

If you've ever found yourself saying:

"I eat healthy."

"I exercise regularly."

"I drink plenty of water."

"I get my steps in."

"Why won't this weight come off?"

You're not alone.

In fact, this is one of the most common frustrations I hear from women in my practice.

The truth is that weight gain isn't always a calorie problem.

Often, it's an inflammation problem.

The Missing Piece Most Women Aren't Looking At

Many women assume stubborn weight gain means they need to:

  • Eat less

  • Exercise more

  • Cut carbs

  • Try a new diet

  • Add another workout

But what if your body is holding onto weight because it's under stress?

Not just emotional stress.

Internal stress.

The kind you can't always see.

Things like:

When the body perceives stress, it often shifts into protection mode.

And one of the ways it protects itself is by holding onto weight.

Inflammation Changes Everything

Inflammation can impact:

  • Blood sugar regulation

  • Insulin sensitivity

  • Cortisol production

  • Hormone balance

  • Energy production

  • Fat burning capacity

  • Water retention

This is why so many women feel like they're doing all the right things but still can't seem to move the scale.

Their body isn't broken.

It's overwhelming.

Melissa's Story: A Perfect Example

Recently on my Confidently Balance Your Hormones podcast, I interviewed my friend Melissa.

Melissa was working out consistently.

She was eating healthy.

She was disciplined.

She was doing everything she thought she needed to do to lose weight.

Yet the harder she pushed, the more weight she gained.

Her energy declined.

Her confidence suffered.

And she felt completely stuck.

The turning point came when she stopped guessing and started testing.

Instead of focusing solely on calories and exercise, she began looking for the hidden stressors creating inflammation within her body.

Once she started addressing those underlying issues, everything changed.

Melissa released over 50 pounds.

Her muscle definition returned.

Her energy improved.

Most importantly, she finally understood why her body had been resisting her efforts.

Her transformation is a powerful reminder that inflammation can dramatically impact how we look, feel, and function.

Why I Love GI Stool Testing

One of the first places I often look when someone is struggling with stubborn weight gain, bloating, fatigue, hormone imbalance, or inflammation is the gut.

The GI Stool Test provides valuable information about:

 Gut bacteria balance

 Digestive capacity

 Inflammation

 Immune function

 Nutrient absorption

 H. pylori

 Parasites

 Yeast and fungal overgrowth

 Opportunistic bacteria

 Overall gut health

Remember, approximately 70% of the immune system resides in the gut.

If inflammation is brewing there, it can affect virtually every system in the body.

Stop Guessing. Start Testing.

One of my favorite sayings is:

Test. Don't Guess.

Because guessing often leads to:

  • More supplements

  • More diets

  • More frustration

  • More wasted time

Testing provides answers.

Answers create clarity.

And clarity creates a plan.

Could Hidden Inflammation Be Affecting Your Weight?

If you're doing all the "right" things but still feel stuck, it may be time to look deeper.

Your body may not need more restriction.

It may need more support.
