Your Fall Wellness Reset: Simple Upgrades to Help You Feel Your Best

By Dee Davidson

Summer is fun, but let’s be real. It can throw us off our game in a big way.

We traveled more. We stayed up later. We ate differently. There were vacations, cookouts, cocktails, ice cream, and days when our normal routines simply go out the window.

Then September arrives and suddenly everyone is talking about fall.

But here’s your reminder: fall doesn’t officially begin until September 22!

That makes this the perfect time to take inventory and ask yourself:

How am I feeling?

What habits disappeared over the summer?

Where does my body need a little extra support?

What can I put into place now that will help me feel better as we head into fall and winter?

Getting back on track doesn’t have to mean completely overhauling your life.

In fact, I’m a much bigger believer in identifying your biggest area of need and starting there.

Here are some of the fall wellness upgrades I’m thinking about this season.

Get Ahead of Cold and Flu Season

I would much rather consistently support the foundations of a healthy immune system than wait until the first sniffle appears and suddenly start throwing everything in the supplement cabinet at my body.

Two nutrients I often think about this time of year are vitamin C and zinc.

Vitamin C supports normal immune function, provides antioxidant support, assists with collagen production, and helps with iron absorption.

Zinc is also essential for normal immune function, wound healing, and many other cellular processes.

I personally like liposomal vitamin C as an option because it has better absorption at a cellular level than pill form.

Remember that supplements are only part of the immune-health conversation.

Sleep matters.

Protein matters.

Blood sugar matters.

Movement matters.

Stress matters.

Hydration matters.

Your gut matters.

Your immune system isn’t something you suddenly turn on when you get sick. Supporting your overall health is something we can work on all year long.

Don’t Forget About Vitamin D

As our opportunity for sunlight exposure begins to change during the fall and winter months, vitamin D is another nutrient worth paying attention to.

Rather than guessing, I prefer testing your 25-hydroxy vitamin D level when appropriate and working with your healthcare provider to determine whether supplementation is needed.

Vitamin D plays important roles in bone health, muscle function, and normal immune function.

More is not automatically better with vitamin D, which is another reason I prefer knowing your level instead of blindly supplementing.

Give Your Skin Some Extra Love

Your internal health isn’t the only thing that notices the change in seasons.

As temperatures drop, humidity changes, and indoor heating comes back on, many people notice that their skin becomes drier.

Fall is when I start paying more attention to hydration and supporting the skin barrier.

I personally choose skincare products with ingredients I feel good about using regularly and love formulas designed to nourish and hydrate aging skin.

I’m also interested in skincare containing prebiotic and probiotic-derived ingredients designed to support the skin microbiome.

For those of us navigating midlife, I’m all for products that support the appearance of hydrated, healthy, smooth, vibrant skin as we age.

My go to skincare is Pure Haven.

Make Gut Health a Fall Priority

You knew I wasn’t going to write a wellness blog without talking about the gut!

Layer Origin has become one of my go-to brands for gut-health products because of its focus on human milk oligosaccharide, or HMO, ingredients and microbiome-supportive nutrition.

Certain HMOs can act as prebiotics, meaning they can help nourish particular beneficial gut microbes.

And why do I care so much about the gut?

Because digestion isn't just about whether or not you have a bowel movement every day.

The gastrointestinal system is involved in digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and communication with other systems throughout the body.

If your gut has felt off after a summer of travel, restaurant meals, alcohol, different foods, or a completely different schedule, fall can be a great time to get back to the basics.

Whole foods.

Adequate fiber as tolerated.

Protein.

Hydration.

Regular bowel movements.

Movement.

And foods that support microbial diversity.

Think About Longevity, Not Just Symptoms

The older I get, the less interested I am in simply adding years to my life.

I want quality years.

I want to travel.

I want to exercise.

I want to think clearly.

I want muscle.

I want energy.

I want independence.

I want to keep doing the things I love.

That’s why I’m fascinated by the conversation around healthspan and longevity.

One area worth learning about is nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule naturally produced by the body that helps blood vessels relax and supports healthy circulation and vascular function.

There are also plenty of foundational ways to support healthy nitric oxide production, including movement, exercise, and foods such as leafy greens and beets.

For me, longevity isn’t about finding one magical anti-aging product.

It’s about creating an environment that supports the body and brain for decades to come.

Make Protein Convenient With Jacob

Fall in our house means school, work, sports, practices, games, activities, and plenty of running around.

Some days it feels like you live in your car!

One of the easiest ways to get thrown off nutritionally is to wait until you’re starving and then grab whatever is available.

That’s why I like having quality, higher-protein snacks ready for busy days.

Protein supports muscle maintenance and repair and can help with satiety. Maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as we age, making protein something I pay particular attention to in midlife.

Convenience matters because the best nutrition plan in the world isn’t very helpful if it doesn't work with your actual life.

Stop Guessing About Your Supplements

This may be my biggest fall message.

Please stop assuming you need every supplement you see someone recommending on social media.

Your friend may swear by magnesium.

Someone on a podcast may tell you that everyone needs zinc.

An influencer may convince you that you need more calcium.

But what does your body need?

This is one of the reasons I love Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis, or HTMA.

I often describe HTMA as a wellness “report card.”

Using a simple, non-invasive hair sample, we can look at mineral levels and, importantly, the relationships between minerals such as:

Calcium

Magnesium

Sodium

Potassium

Zinc

Copper

Iron

Manganese

Chromium

And more.

The patterns can provide functional wellness clues that we can consider alongside your symptoms, diet, lifestyle, history, and other testing.

We can explore mineral patterns related to areas such as stress response, metabolism and energy, blood sugar regulation, thyroid-related mineral patterns, and overall mineral balance.

HTMA can also report certain potentially toxic elements, although a hair result alone does not establish toxicity or prove that an exposure is causing symptoms.

It isn't a diagnostic test, and it doesn't replace bloodwork or medical evaluation.

But it gives us another piece of data.

And I would much rather have data than randomly keep adding bottles to your supplement cabinet.

The goal isn't to give you 15 new things to do.

It’s to help you better understand where your body may need support so you can make more intentional decisions.

Your Fall Reset Doesn't Need to Be Complicated

You don't need every product mentioned in this blog.

You don't need to completely change your diet on Monday.

You don't need 12 new supplements.

And you certainly don't need to approach fall feeling like everything you did this summer needs to be “undone.”

Instead, take inventory.

Where is your weak link right now?

Is it sleep?

Nutrition?

Protein?

Gut health?

Movement?

Stress?

Mineral balance?

Your nervous system?

Pick one area.

Make one upgrade.

Get consistent.

Then build from there.

Here’s to living longer, focusing on preventive health, recovering faster, improving quality of life, and upgrading your brain.

Your body will thank you.
